Treatment Resistant Depression

Resistant Depression

You are said to be suffering from treatment resistant depression when you fail to respond to at least two of the available treatments. The most common treatment methods for this disorder are medication, psychotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy. There are also other alternative treatments for this condition. They include several relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga and even acupuncture.

This illness affects people of all ages and is a very dangerous and disturbing mental disorder. Most people who suffer from this condition normally recover after treatment. If this condition is left untreated, it can lead to devastating consequences. It is therefore important to seek proper and timely treatment before the situation becomes severe.

Resistant depression can be as a result of alcohol or substance abuse. Continued bad relationship between you and your spouse or with other family members is also said to exacerbate the situation. Chronic pain can also reduce the effectiveness of antidepressants as well as other treatments. If you develop resistance to traditional treatment methods such as medication, psychotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy, there are other alternative treatments.

Deep Brain Stimulation or DBS is said to help in treating this illness. Researchers from Emory University, School of Medicine determined that after regular treatment for two months, five out of 6 patients reported 50 percent reduction in the illness. A combination of various Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) is also said to help in treating resistant depression. Lithium augmentation is also said to be very effective in treating this condition.

Treatment resistant depression and ECT. Is ECT the best option? (Answers: 5) (Comments: 0)
I backed out of the ECT treatments last week. I already know the risk and the benefits of ECT. I was scheduled for the treatment and I got scared. I've been on so many medications and years of therapy and now I'm faced with ECT. My question is about alternatives to ECT. I know that ECT is a long commitment. 3 to 6 months of treatments and once a month after that to keep the depression in check. I've heard good results and I heard bad results. Why is the treatments so long? Even with good results, the success rates are still low (but higher than medications). The down side is memory side effects.

Has anyone ever heard of a Vagal Nerve Stimulator or have one, it is used for Treatment Resistant Depression.? (Answers: 1) (Comments: 0)
I have depression that has not responded to many anti-depressants, it involes a small pacemaker-like appliance surgically placed in the left chest and a wire is placed around the Vagal nerve and runs up into the brain. It gives small impulses to the brain to produce the chemicals that are either absent from the brain or are not responding. It does not produce any drug into the body. This isnot like electric shock treatments, which I have had, never again. I have had just about every treatment for depression and this has been FDA approved to alleviate TRD. I am at the end of the rope and this seems like it will give me a quality of life back. My insurance has denied this much needed treatment, does anyone have any ideas to help get the denial overturned? I am very serious and would appreciate only concerned helpful help. If you think this barbaric or funny , I don't. It beats thinking about suicide. Thank you very much.
